I will be teaching an immersive one-day workshop for intermediate and advanced poets from 10am-4pm on Saturday 15th September 2012 at The Circle on Rockingham Lane in Sheffield city centre. Places are available at the moment. Here are all the details…

Writing the Contemporary Poem

What does it mean to be a contemporary poet? How can poems register and respond to contemporary life? Should they even try to do that, or might the wish to appear contemporary soon look dated?

This workshop will explore ideas about the nature of contemporary poetry, looking at both canonical and recent poems, and giving you the chance to try out new techniques for creating contemporary work. We will consider how to occupy the present moment, how to position poems in relation to the past, and how to discover new forms and connections. Expect thoughtful discussion, challenging exercises, and time to read back and talk about your drafts in a respectful, committed atmosphere.

The workshop costs £70 and there are a maximum of 10 places available. To express your interest in booking a place, please email me through the contact form with three sample poems and a brief explanation of your experience with poetry to date. Payment is by cheque in advance.
